Turbo Cars: TurboChargers
Turbochargers and Wastegates. For the serious performance enthusiast replacing
minor parts is never enough for their power requirements. One of the best 
ways
to increase horsepower is to increase the size and or flow of your turbocharger.
Turbo upgrades can be as simple as replacing with the next size up (TD04 to
TD05, or K24 to K26) or to adapt a large turbo to an existing set up.
An example is Autopassion's project turbo car, a 1996 Subaru WRX Sti. This car
was fitted with a top mount Garret T04E among many other modifications. On a
WRX some reshaping is required, however, on T25 or T28 set ups (Nissan, Ford,
Saab), the larger T04E is relatively easy to fit.
Autopassion supplies Garrett and Turbonetics turbochargers. Turbonetics turbochargers
can be supplied with polished compressor side and varying A/R ratios, depending
on your performance needs. Some customers prefer the largest - highest flow
turbos - because their cars are purely for racing or drag racing, where turbo
lag (delayed power onset) is not an issue. For high horsepower road cars, very
large turbochargers create much more turbo lag. A smaller hybrid Garrett T3/T04E
or T04B (or any of the GT range) size is recommended for most road car applications.

A
common upgrade for turbocharged cars is to fit an externally mounted wastegate.
Most modern turbo cars use internally mounted wastegates to vent excess boost
pressure. These internally mounted types are incorporated into the turbo housing
and are limited in size and flow, and they can also act as a heat trap.
To improve boost control efficiency on a highly upgraded turbo car, it is recommended
that an external wastegate is fitted. This is also a necessity when fitting
an aftermarket turbocharger that has no internal wastegate. Fitting the correct
wastegate will reduce boost creep and unwanted heat on your turbocharged car.
We recommend Turbonetics wastegates for most applications, though we also source
Tial wastegates when requested.
External wastegates from Turbonetics are available from 32mm, 38mm, and 42mm
or above. Depending on your engine output, there is a Turbonetics wastegate
to suit. The 32mm Deltagate is good for 350+bhp; 35mm will flow up to 450bhp
and 42mm Racegate will hold over 900bhp. Autopassion is a distributor for Turbonetics

When upgrading your turbocharger it is important to match the correct type of turbocharger to the rest of your engine package. We have available a large variety of high performance turbochargers in ball bearing and standard. We carry the GT Series ball bearing turbochargers from Garrett and Turbonetics. And our range also includes Trust and HKS turbo systems. Note all Turbonetics turbochargers use turbine wheels with a “big shaft” to ensure reliability at high boost pressures.
